Music Making with Suno

Today I decide to create some music with Suno -- the AI music creator. Registration is by linking up your social media account. It currently allows an account created that is linked to your Discord, Google or Microsoft accounts.

You will get 50 credits everyday. Each prompt will cost you 10 credits and you will get 2 songs generated; each with a slightly different sound, up to 2 minutes in length. There are two ways of specifying your prompt and you can choose to create instrumental music or one with lyrics. There is also an option to use version 3 or version 2 of Suno. The prompt window for "create" mode has a limit of 200 characters, including spaces.

There are a few functions available once you have generated the piece. You can download to repurpose the music or copy a link to share your music. You can also extend the length of the music, or simply delete and move it to trash. The upvote/downvote function is probably there to help provide feedback to the AI whether something works or not. For simplicity, I don't use this function.

I have used v3 for my attempts. This is because V3 has enhanced audio fidelity with the ability to generate music in various languages. For example: I tried the "create" mode for instrumental music with this prompt:

background music that is slow paced and calm for a travel video set in japan

this is one version of the song generated: https://suno.com/song/07993427-d048-4484-8514-cfbfc7a03b30

I tried to create another piece of instrumental music with a "second shot" prompt that is more specific (i.e. refined) than my first prompt:

background music that is slow paced and calm for a travel video set in japan. use shamisen and koto as the main instruments

this is one version of the song generated: https://suno.com/song/a294cf0a-1d52-4e2a-98b3-220b3ebc1b44

What is interesting is that it did not use Shamisen nor Koto for the music. But I did like this song better than the previous one. I went on to try to create a piece with vocals and lyrics with the "create" mode.

These are the lyrics generated:

[Verse] Kopitiam kopi goh
Rojak on teh go
Orchard Road Take MRT
Where you wanna go?
Sentosa Marina Bay
This is where we play
Singapore We never sleep
We rockin' night and day

Kaya toast
Kopi gao
Hawker center vibe
Bak chor mee
Chili crab
Taste buds come alive
Merlion rise
Flying high
Proud nation's spirit
Singlish slang
Unique sound
Can you feel it?

[Verse 2]
Lepak on East Coast
Chillin' by the sea
Kueh lapis
Durian
Local delicacies
Gardens by the Bay
Supertrees reaching sky
Lion City shining bright as we unify

and these are two versions of the song generated:

  • https://suno.com/song/0a96dc5f-d982-47b8-bab0-4dc8c740ed7f
  • Now I move on to the "Custom Mode". You can click on the toggle at the top to turn it on. This mode gives you a template to specify the lyrics that you want, the style of music that you want, and also the title of the song.

    for example:

and these are two versions of the song generated:

  • https://suno.com/song/ae85950c-3c92-4654-83b0-031a8aa1402d
  • You can refer to this list for the styles that are available: https://www.suno.wiki/faq/style-and-lyrics/styles-and-genres/

You would have noticed by now that there are some words that the AI mispronounce, for example, Changi and Merlion. But I will say that the results are pretty good so far and I can see many content creators making use of Suno for background music, or even create a song for intro and outro of the content.
